Particle か and interrogative pronoun なに

The particle か

When you want to ask a question, simply put the particle か (ka) at the end of the sentence.

• Ex :
• あなたは 学生がくせいですか?     Are you a student?
• anata wa gakusei desu ka

• 本ほんですか?     Is it a book?
• kore wa hon desu ka
  

  ---

• 彼かれは 日本人にほんじんですか?    Is he Japanese?
• kare wa nihonjin desu ka

はい : Yes いいえ : No

The answer to a yes/no question usually starts with はい(hai) or いいえ (iie). はい(hai) means “Yes”  and いいえ (iie) means“No ”.

• Ex :
• はい、私わたしは 学生がくせいでした。 Yes, I was a student.
• hai, watashi wa gakusei deshita

• はい、それは 本ほんです。 Yes, that is a book.
• hai, sore wa hon desu
  

  ---

• いいえ、私わたしは 先生せんせい ではありません。 No, I am not a teacher.
• iie, watashi wa sensei dewa arimasen
  

  ---

• いいえ、これは 辞書じしょ ではありません。 No, this is not a dictionary.
• iie, kore wa jisho dewa arimasen

なに : Interrogative pronoun “What”

なに(nani) is an interrogative pronoun which means“What”. Before d, t, and n sounds, なに(nani) becomes なん(nan).

• Ex :
• これは 何なん ですか?    kore wa nan desu ka    What is this?
• それは 辞書じしょです。 sore wa jisho desu    That is a dictionary.

• それは 何なん ですか?    sore wa nan desu ka     What is that?
• これは かばんです。 kore wa kaban desu     This is a bag.

• あれは 何なん ですか?     are wa nan desu ka      What is that?
• あれは 学校がっこうです。 are wa gakkou desu     That is a school.
